King Fahd Musical Fountain, Saudi Arabia, A Fountain Built Into The Sea

Apr 21, 2022

The King Fahd Musical Fountain Company, also known as the Jeddah Fountain, was built from 1980 to 1983 and is the tallest man-made fountain in the world. The King Fahd Fountain is located in Jeddah, a port city on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. This fountain introduces the waters of the Red Sea, with a jet height of 1,024 feet and a speed of 233 miles per hour. It is described in detail in the book "Desert Oasis Saudi Arabia".

King Fahd's fountain is a very unique fountain, it is not in the palace, not in the square, but built in the sea. This is because King Fahd likes the sea, so the palace in Jeddah is the "Peace Palace" built by the sea. After the Peace Palace was built, the designer put the "Peace Palace" and the sea into one building. The fountain was built into the sea, and the sea water fountain was built in the sea. Recognized as an architectural masterpiece since its inception in 1985, it is now a symbol of Jeddah, spewing water up to 312 meters.

As a seawater fountain project, the technical complexity of building a fountain is much higher than that of freshwater. First, the salinity content is different, and the seawater is accompanied by sand and gravel. Therefore, it is not easy for the seawater to reach a predetermined height, and pressure support is required. With the help of modern technology, the fountain designers finally found a design and construction plan: the key is to design a high-pressure water pump, to have pressure to spray seawater into the sky, and to avoid the corrosion of seawater and the blockage of sand and gravel in the pipeline design. The designers of the Maritime Wonders Engineering said that they first found a 90-meter high slope, built a power distribution station on it, and built the support structure on another high slope. A flat piece of land was dug on the seabed, and the pipeline was laid 30 meters below the sea.

Pumps and pipes cannot be seen on land. In order to spray a water column with a considerable height, there are 3 centrifugal spinners, 18 auxiliary pumps (3.5 mW each). The pump pumps out 625 liters of water per second, and the two main pumps pump water at the same time. On a calm day, the water can shoot up to a height of 312 meters (1,024 feet). It is speculated that the highest point of the water column exceeds that of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The water column stays in the air for 15 seconds, and the water column weighs 18,750 kilograms.
